Planting pomegranates

Planting pomegranates is a rewarding endeavor, whether for personal enjoyment or commercial purposes. What are the basic principles followed when planting pomegranates?

In case of newly cleared land, it is advisable to plant an annual crop a year before growing pomegranate. Site selection should take into consideration air circulation and exposure to the sun as pomegranates require full sun to produce quality fruit. Ensure the site has good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases. Areas with very strong winds should be avoided as they might damage the plants.

They prefer well-draining soil with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. If your soil is heavy or clay, consider amending it with organic matter to improve drainage.
The trees are planted when there is enough water. In areas where rainfall is not sufficient, irrigation can be done. These prevent the drying out of roots.

In Uganda, the rectangular pattern of planting is preferred, as it eases movement of machinery in between rows as well as other activities such as inspection, thinning, and pruning. The planting holes should be around 2 ft by 2ft by 2 ft. It should have a spacing of 3m - 5m between rows and 4m - 7m between plants in a row and a standard of 4m by 4m.
