A BASIC COMPARISON OF THE HASS AND FUERTE VARIETIES

The most common and popular avocado varieties are the hass and fuerte varieties. What then are the major similarities and differences between the two?

Appearance
The hass has a dark green to purplish color when ripe while the fuerte has smooth thin and bright green skin. Both have fantastic evergreen glossy foliage that lends beauty to your landscape year-round!

Seasonality
The hass avocado tends to be available all year round while the fuerte is seasonal in nature which tends to be available mostly from January to May and starts fruiting from February.

Nutrition
Both varieties have similar nutritional value and benefits as they are rich in healthy fats, fiber, minerals and vitamins.

Popularity
Hass avocados are mostly preferred especially in the export markets due to its flavor and creamy texture. The fuerte variety is preferred for its smooth texture and mild taste and is often available in the local markets.

Ripening
Hass ripens after harvesting and it turns darker in color. The ripeness can be determined by a gentle squeeze.  For the fuerte, it can be picked mature and allowed to ripen off the tree. It however doesn’t develop its full flavor potential off the tree as well as the hass. The Fuertes also do not soften and hence hard to determine when they are ripe.
